Auction Hunters

Now, I was surfing on the TV one night a few weeks back, probably right after the groin injury and came across a show called Auction Hunters, which I enjoyed. That led me to Storage Wars, which was ok, but I prefer the former.

So I started surfing around, and came across a few auctions in the GTA, including one in Ajax this wednesday. I mentioned my plans to Dave, and while I had to talk him into rescheduling a meeting, he definitely wanted to check it out, as did I.

So I hooked up the trailer, picked up some cash and Dave, and we headed to Ajax. Got there before 10, only to discover that the auction was actually at 12. Crap.

So we ran an errand for Dave that required the trailer, Vicki put on a late breakfast for us, and then we headed back.

The crowd was huge - over 100, I think, and it's fair to say it was a huge representation of society. People of all races, levels of income, etc. One guy looked like he thought he was a cowboy, and there were some people of the extreme high mileage variety. Another guy was there with his two sons, and they were decked out in designer everything. It was interesting to see.

The first locker had a chair, some kind of big foam statue, and a few bags. My interest level? None. Went for $55, which was $54.99 more than I would have paid for it.

The second was worse. It had an old microwave, and a small metal couch, with the worst stain I'd ever seen on it. I overheard someone calling it Monica Lewinsky's couch, which was tasteless but possible, I guess. Those were the only two things in the locker.

The price on this one? A buck. Plus $100 deposit, of course.

Just when I thought this was gonna be a total waste of time, other than entertainment value and a good time with Dave, we got to the third locker. A 10x10, it had lots of interesting things. Visible were an oak pedestal table and chairs, a 32 inch LCD tv box, a mitre saw, and a lot of other interesting boxes and bins with potential. Using the things I'd seen on the show, I valued it around $1000, and set my limit at $500.

Before I could even think of bidding, the price was well over my limit, and wound up being $1050.

The last locker was just as disappointing as the first two, and so we trailered home empty handed, but certainly highly entertained. Keeping my eyes open for other ones, although who knows if I really want to get into this. Just for fun, maybe.
