Breaking down the Break

Well, hard to believe it's come to a close - the girls are almost asleep, and we're all back to school and work (ok, school) for tomorrow.

Can't really remember what went down on Monday, other than that it was my squash finals and I wound up playing in the championship game, although it was absolutely no contest whatsoever - since I just wanted a match, and the guy who was supposed to be playing there had 24 stitches in his arm from going thru a window. Interesting accident - not sure how it happened - he wasn't very forthcoming about it, at any rate. Got my butt kicked, but got a bit of a run, which was nice.

Tuesday was the big day - ever since early January, when Wagjag featured Snow Valley lift ticket and rentals for $28. It was Maya's first day skiing! We got up early, Vera came over to stay with Chloe and we hit the road. It was pretty obvious pretty early that Maya wasn't quite right - she was grumpy, tired, and completely irritable - and that was her high point. We had a lesson booked and paid for, so no matter what, we were going. She wouldn't eat any of her breakfast, and of course, was heating up quite nicely when we checked her forehead, although she told us she was freezing.

So we were in the lesson line, she's completely dissolving, and we make a decision, at least partially based on the fact that someone right in front of us in the line is trying to get a lesson, and we have one we no longer want. I'm not one for just walking away from $75, so it turned into the perfect situation. So they took over our lesson, and that left me with the Wagjags, because there was no time the rest of the week to make it back up to Barrie. So I approached a family just arriving, pointed out my clearly ill daughter in the corner, and sold them the Wagjags. Sure, I lost a bit of money on the deal, but it was better than them going completely unused. So we hustled into Barrie to hit a pharmacy, got some fever meds, and then hit the 400 back to TO. Maya fell asleep in the car, completely out of character for her, and when she woke up she was much better, almost back to normal. So we got home by noon, and Vera was able to leave and make it to the airport in plenty of time to pick up Nadine, coming in to work with Sprockets and get interviewed.

Wednesday was a full day, swimming for both girls (although we cancelled Maya after the Tuesday disaster), the dentist and gymnastics lessons. I wound up taking Maya to the dentist, Gabi did gymnastics and swimming, and Chloe and I spent the evening hanging out while cooking dinner. It was a lovely time.

Thursday, I'd made an appointment with a guy at the home show to come and look at our porch railings and posts, and when he was 40 minutes late, I called him. When I get a response like "That's today?" I no longer am interested in doing business with you. Just so any potential contractors know.... So I headed off for a squash game with Carm, which was great, then over to my parents to help pick up a dishwasher, then I had to be home to get ready for the big date night.

Tina came over to look after the girls, and Gabi and I jetted off to the Rosedale Diner, for which I had a Groupon I'd purchased back in September. We both ordered a variation of duck, not sure why. Mine was duck on poutine, which I'd read about, and now never have to bother with ordering again. Serious Meh. The service was lousy, the chair felt like it could deposit me on the floor at any moment, and Rosedale itself was terrible - full of arty farty stores that I hate visiting. Of course, Gabi loves them - but hey, opposites attract, right?

Then we were off to Billy Elliot, parking in the Eaton Centre. I gave Gabi the parking ticket for safe keeping, and we got to our seats. Now, I remember a few years back in NYC, sitting in the very last seat in the very last row for Tarzan and being miserable because I was so wedged in. Well, in a way this was worse - I was right up against the wall, and we put our coats in the spot I should have saved for my legs, and was so uncomfortable that it was a distraction throughout the entire show, which, for me, was also meh. The cross-dressing bit was funny, but I thought it was a show in serious need of a good editor - at nearly 3 hours, painfully long, and for me, literally painful.

The evening ended on more positive notes, as we lost our parking ticket and got dinged for $30 by the Eaton Centre. At least the kids were asleep when we got home.

Friday night was poker night in the mancave, which of course necessitated transforming it back into the mancave from it's current state as the toycave. So I cleaned it up to my satisfaction, and then Gabi came down, indicating her lack of satisfaction, so we fixed it together while Chloe played on the computer. Poker was awesome, even though I lost every game - can't win em all, but I would have liked to have won one. 9 guys all told, and I hope everyone had as good a time as I did. It went a little late, making Saturday squash a bit hard to get up for, but I managed.

So that leaves us til today, the big one, Chloe's birthday. My little girl is 3, and thank goodness - we couldn't get out of the terrible two's fast enough. Her last 2 year old meltdown was memorable, including twisting herself out of her carseat, running away from us down the street on Fortune Gate, trying to pull the dvd player off it's mount in the van....screaming and yelling and crying....it got so bad I went into Cedar Heights plaza. That's where I had my car accident a few years back, and I try never to go in there, never mind when I have the trailer hooked up too. The parking lot is absolute insanity. Gabi went into Shoppers, and bought her a soother. It cost $10, and it was totally worth it, because that's a small price to pay for your sanity.

So today's birthday party went well, Chloe got some cool gifts and was over the top excited, and despite a few meltdowns when we dragged her away from the computer and took her out of the bathtub, bedtime has gone fine. Off to watch the last ever Big Love now, then sleep and getting ready for school tomorrow!

Our first March staycation in a few years...but it went well, and I got 13 out of 16 things on my to do list done....not bad for anyone, I think. The other 3 I'll probably be able to take care of tomorrow.
